Courageous Woman

Courageous Woman

Featuring *SK*

“There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”

Elizabeth Bennet – Pride and Prejudice

This picture is a perfect example of why I say I don’t want to limit myself to one style of blogging.  For me it is so much more satisfying when I can be inspired by something whether it is fashion or decor, modern or vintage.

I thought of the movie Pride and Prejudice immediately when I saw this dress by *SK*.  I love the movie and the main character, Elizabeth Bennet,  or perhaps I should say I love the personality given to the character by the book’s author, Jane Austen.  Elizabeth is courageous, playful, independent and intelligent….she just doesn’t put up with crap, you know?

The quote above is one of my favorites.  I have always felt that same way for as long as I can remember but didn’t realize how fortunate that really was until I was older.  Peer pressure has never been an issue for me at any point in my life and I realize how lucky I was to have escaped it.  I have never felt a need to fit in if that meant pretending and I have never been afraid to admit to my likes or dislikes about something, even if they put me in the minority.

These strengths begin to be formed in childhood and I realize not everyone is allowed to nurture these strengths.  My wish for all is that you have the same courage Elizabeth had and that it rises up when you need it most!

My post today is for one of the blogger challenges offered by the SL Christmas Expo called “Why I Relay“.  The challenge is for anyone who has a personal reason to support Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society and like it or not, I have reason.

I am a two time breast cancer survivor. First diagnosed in 2007, I went through the usual treatment; chemo, surgery, radiation. Thankfully, I was able to move forward, rarely giving cancer another thought, determined not to live in fear of the “what if’s” and I did that successfully. Fast forward to 2016, when I learned it was back, this time learning I had inherited a gene mutation, BRCA2 that raised my odds of getting breast and ovarian cancer greatly, 80% in fact. There was more surgery, more chemo but I did it all again, successfully and am doing well today.

Since the second diagnosis, its been a little harder not to think about the “what if’s” but they are mostly in regards to my daughter, who is about to be tested for the gene mutation she has a 50/50 chance of having.  So, why do I relay?  I relay for myself, I relay for my dear friend, Toni, who lost her fight after 3 graceful battles, I relay for my nephew, newly diagnosed with Lymphoma and about to begin chemo, I relay for all of those who have fought this battle successfully or gracefully never gave up trying and most of all I relay for my beautiful daughter, my only child, the greatest treasure I have ever known so that if she is faced with hard decisions, she will have the knowledge to make the best choices for her, in part due to the work done by The Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society and all of the other organizations working to end cancer.

Please visit the SL Christmas Expo, look around, shop, donate. There are great things available and with creators donating proceeds up to 100%, it is effortless on your part to support this great cause.

If I Only Had A Brain

If I Only Had A Brain(1)

Considering The Wizard of Oz is my all time favorite movie, I am pretty partial to scarecrows.  Most people don’t know that The Wizard of Oz movie is actually based on just one of a  whole series of Oz books by Frank L. Baum.  There are 14 books in total and they have been my library for years!  The original book was published in 1900 and when MGM released the film adaption in 1939, they included in the credits a dedication that to this day touches me right in the heart.

“For nearly forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart; and Time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashion. To those of you who have been faithful to it in return …and to the Young in Heart …we dedicate this picture.”

The sunflower field by TLC will add an instant touch of autumn to your home and includes 3 highly detailed, stand alone birds you will use all year round.  You can find my scarecrow buddy, created by  pose-S, at REDEUX, open now through the 21st.   He includes 5 poses and is a great decor piece even if you are not using him for photos.  GO ahead and climb on his back…it will keep you “young at heart”.

Hair Fair 2018 BannerReady for my close up.jpg

“I’m ready for my closeup”..black eye and chipped tooth photo ready!  I’ve never had a black eye in the “real” world so this was actually fun to do.  It reminded me of when my daughter got a black eye playing softball in elementary school.  She thought it was the coolest thing!  Right now I think this hair by Tram is the coolest thing but then again I love, and own,  lots of Tram hair.  This one is currently available at the Hair Fair.

Hair in Second Life is a big deal, at least for me.  I have way more hair than I do shoes.  Hair in “real” life is a big deal too.  As a survivor of cancer (twice) I know what its like to NOT have hair and honestly can’t imagine having to go through that as a child.  We know children can be so cruel to each other.

The creators participating in the Hair Fair are donating portions of sale proceeds to Wigs for Kids and even if hair is not your thing you can also still contribute.  You can make a donation at one of the many kiosks located around the Hair Fair sims.  You can read more about Wigs for Kids and the work they do here.

Sidewalk Masterpiece

Sidewalk Masterpiece

I saw a little girl in the store the other day, pleading her mother for one of those big buckets of sidewalk chalk and it reminded me of all the sidewalk art I used to do with my own daughter.  When she was very small we lived in a neighborhood where we had sidewalks and plenty of driveway space for her to scribble out masterpiece after masterpiece with those glorious fat sticks of chalk.

When I was little, sidewalk chalk wasn’t that common…the only chalk I remember was in school. The coveted predecessor to that chalk was the big, 64 count box of Crayola crayons…you know, the one with the sharpener in the box. Oh, it was a glorious thing to behold.  The mother did, indeed, get that bucket of chalk for that little girl and I was glad for it.

One day she will look back and wistfully long for the day that she sat on the warm pavement with her little girl and drew colorful stick figures and rainbows!

Calling All Angels

For my mother, an angel who still walks among us and who, at some point in time will leave this earth, but will continue to always walk beside me. I love you!
